Whether you’re most familiar with roses from holidays, family gardens, or the florist, you’ve probably seen that there are many different colors, sizes and types of them. There are actually many different types of roses that grow all over the world. Some of the major types include hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, miniatures, mini-floras, old garden, climbing, and more. Below, the characteristics of each type are listed – which type do you usually receive?
The long-stemmed roses you might be most familiar with are hybrid teas. They were first named and classified in 1867. Smaller clustered flowers are called floribundas. When you combine those two types, you’ll find grandifloras, which can be long-stemmed or clustered, or a combination.
Miniature roses can grow in clusters, as well, and the size of flower ranges from a half inch to two inches. The plant, leaves and buds are all small, and they are usually grown and sold in containers, versus the ground. Mini-flora are bigger than miniatures, but smaller than regular-sized roses.
Old garden types come in all sizes, growth types and colors. They can grow in plants as small as a foot from the ground, or grow as tall as 50 feet. Some different kinds of this type are damask, wild roses, thornless and many more.
Climbing roses are composed of three major types – large flowered, old-fashioned rambling, and hybrid teas. They grow on trellises, fences, climber canes and more. Old-fashioned rambling roses only bloom once a season, but their flowers last for at least four weeks.
