The extreme sport of paintball is an acquired taste. You don’t really grow up watching paintball games on TV, like you might with football or baseball. Instead, players are attracted to the sport for certain reasons. Maybe you are no good at golf and you’re sick of playing basketball. Perhaps you like the tactical adventure – you’ve played plenty of Xbox combat games and you get a rush from battle-style play. Or maybe you love the sports facet of the competition and the teamwork component.

The people who play paintball sports are total individuals; this is not a mainstream sport. Like extreme snowboarders and skateboarders, paintball players are looking for something different to do. They’re searching for a different kind of rush. These adrenaline junkies love this grown-up version of hide-and-seek. Most of the players aren’t playing because they’re attracted to aggression, but are playing because the sport requires an unusual set of skills. There are winners and losers, and funnily enough, the losers just happen to go home spattered in paint.

The sport is all about fun, and is very safe, as long as you play with the proper protective gear. It’s all about strategy, teamwork, and not giving up. While the game has had a few detractors, who say that the sport encourages violence, the majority of paintball competitors are just looking for a unique kind of tournament to participate in. From Britain, to Canada, to the U.S., adolescents and adults alike are finding the sport to be completely addictive.

Competitors describe the feeling of running out onto the game field the way that some describe sitting atop a giant rollercoaster hill: both scary and amazing at once. There are casual players and there are league players. There are speedball competitors and then there are wooded-terrain players. Because this is one of the fastest growing sports, you’re sure to find like-minded friends who want to join you in your quest to win.
